Entry for 'I Heart Photos: Best Face Photo, January 2011'

Image
This week's challenge at I Heart Photos is the best face photo taken in January.  I am submitting this photo of  our Little Boy, taken at a park near our house.

You can check out all the other entries here.  This adorable picture of Little Boy is #301.

It is a beautiful and sunny day today.

Innocent Wonder

Image
This week's theme at I Heart Faces Blog is Innocent Wonder.  This is my first time entering, I couldn't resist submitting this picture of Little Girl.  It was taken at the zoo....all the different animals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, and fish there and what holds her attention and makes her wonder is a roly-poly bug!

What Went Wrong?

Image
Saturday was a beautiful day.  We went to the greenbelt and creek area a few blocks from our house with the kids and their scooters.  I shot over 200 pictures with the new camera but was very disappointed with what I found when we got home.  Most of my pictures were over-exposed despite what I thought was a correct reading on the light meter.  Photos with the telephoto lens were grainy.  The decent pictures were general scenery pictures and nothing special.  I did get lucky with a cute picture of Little Boy.

Today I'm going to spend time with my 'Understanding Exposure' book and the new camera and hopefully I will figure out what I did wrong.

Blueberry Pancakes

Image
Mmmm, blueberry pancakes for breakfast.  The weekend is off to a good start!

Blueberry pancake recipe is from The Family Kitchen by Debra Ponzek.
My favorite cookbooks and recipes can be found here.

Friday Morning Photos

After dropping the kids off at school I used the new camera to some shots along Marsh Creek Road and Camino Diablo.

Thursday in Pictures

Image
Today I went to the Martinez Marina to take some pictures.  There is always something interesting at the Marina when I don't have my camera.  I had my camera and there was nothing going on....no interesting birds, people, boats...nothing.  The only semi-interesting pictures I took were these two:

I did have a very nice surprise when I got home....my new camera had arrived!  Another Canon EOS, a much newer model than my original DSLR.
The first picture I took with the new camera was a picture of my husband, Mr. Coffee. He is taking a picture of me using the original Canon.

Mr. Coffee wanted to use the new camera to take some photos so he became the special guest photographer today as I made pizza for dinner.

Four kids, two pizzas, no left-overs!

Monday's Adventure

Image
Today I took the kids on an adventure to check out some local points of interest.  Our main destination was the abandoned Byron Hot Springs and we made a few stops along the way.
I thought we would have the place to ourselves for exploring.  Turns out there was a film crew, a lot of traffic, and a lot of people there.  The kids and I stayed away from the main building but made our way around it taking pictures as we went.  When we got to the back side a man approached us and asked if I was a member of the film crew.  I told him I was not and he told us to leave, we were trespassing on private property.
Note to Self:  Next time I am asked if I am part of a film crew the answer is yes!

More information on the Byron Hot Springs can be found here.

White Balance

Image
I'm reading about (and trying very hard to figure out) the white balance settings on my camera.  The author of my Understanding Photography book recommends using the 'cloudy' setting whenever outside.  The top picture is on the automatic white balance setting and the second picture was taken with the 'cloudy' setting.

Sweet 16

Image
Big Girl recently turned 16 and she had some (very lipsticked, loud, giggly, hungry, sleepless) friends over tonight to celebrate.

Cupcakes!

Little Girl got a kiss.

No remarkable sunrise on the way to school this morning, which was too bad.  I was all prepared to whip out my camera, pre-attached to the monopod, and start snapping away.  The kids would have loved that.  Instead I stopped at Clayton Community Park and got some shots of Mt. Diablo's peaks in the fog.  I took these pictures in the span of 8 minutes.  It's amazing how fast the fog moves.

The two pictures below were taken four minutes apart.
