This week's lesson in A Year With My Camera: Aperture. 
This week we learned about the creative effect of aperture:   the ability to affect depth of field or blurring of the background.  The lower your f-number, the higher the aperture, and the smaller your depth of field.   Only the subject of the picture is in focus.
The higher your f-number, the lower the aperture, and the larger your depth of field.   A larger amount of the picture is in focus.
Homework Assignments:
Take 2 photos of the same subject, one at your min and one at your max apertures.


Know the closest focusing distances for each one of your lenses.



Show us your bokeh.

Day 22: Explore

Capture Your 365 Day 22: Explore.  Today I decided to stop and explore this monument I pass by often while driving.  With a Google search I found out it is a monument to an avid cyclist, George Sartor,  who was struck by a car and killed at this intersection in 2015.  Mr. Sartor rode his bike to and from work, won many bike races,  participated in the 129 mile Death Ride through the Sierra Nevadas three times,  and logged over 22,000 miles on his bike.  He left behind 5 children.

This week's lesson in A Year With My Camera:  Introduction to Exposure. 





The photos on the left was taken in my usual mode, full auto,  where the camera automatically corrects to the exposure to 18% grey.  The photos on the right are straight out of the camera, on manual, where I control the exposure.

A Year With My Camera.... Introduction to Exposure

This week's lesson in A Year With My Camera.... Introduction to Exposure. 
I learned that when in auto mode my camera will automatically adjust exposure to 18% grey. The left picture is a white sheet of paper, the right is black paper. My camera automatically adjusted the exposure to 18% grey, making them look identical. 
Next step: going off auto and taking control of the exposure myself!

Rule of Thirds seems like an easy concept to follow  but all of my shots just looked off center to me.  I have a very limited editing program (Picasa)  so this photo was just cropped and straightened a bit.  I'm not sure if this follows the Rule of Thirds or is just off center.
